About Us

Enabling genomic data sharing for the benefit of human health.

Overview

The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) is an international, nonprofit alliance formed in 2013 to accelerate the potential of research and medicine to advance human health. Bringing together 500+ leading organizations working in healthcare, research, patient advocacy, life science, and information technology, the GA4GH community is working together to create frameworks and standards to enable the responsible, voluntary, and secure sharing of genomic and health-related data. All of our work builds upon the Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-Related Data.

GA4GH Connect is a five-year strategic plan that aims to drive uptake of standards and frameworks for genomic data sharing within the research and healthcare communities in order to enable responsible sharing of clinical-grade genomic data by 2022. GA4GH Connect links our Work Streams with Driver Projects—real-world genomic data initiatives that help guide our development efforts and pilot our tools.

Statement on Responsible Genomic Data Sharing

The responsible and secure sharing of genomic and health data is key to accelerating research and improving human health, which is the aim of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH). Science and society are partners in international data sharing, which contributes to the quality of genomics and health data and so improves health care for all. The GA4GH Framework, policies, standards, and tools seek to meet the scientific and medical needs of research participants and patients around the world, and to respect the level of data security and privacy that individuals expect and to which they consent. The Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-Related Data is founded on the human right of everyone to benefit from science and its applications as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, article 27. GA4GH encourages and supports the minimization of data-sharing risks and the prevention of data breaches.

Principles of the Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-Related Data:
  • Respect for the data sharing and privacy preferences of participants
  • Transparency of governance and operations
  • Accountability to best practices in technology, ethics, and public outreach
  • Inclusivity by partnering and building trust among stakeholders
  • Collaboration to share data and information to advance human health
  • Innovation in order to develop an ecosystem that accelerates progress
  • Agility to ensure we act swiftly to benefit those suffering with disease
  • Independence by structure and governance
